Beginner Crochet Stitches

Crochet is one of our favorite crafts since it is so easy to learn how to crochet. To get started, all you need is a hook, some yarn, and a few basic stitches. You can start making all kinds of wonderful objects as little as a potholder and as huge as a blanket with just one fundamental stitch (and a chain). Once you’ve mastered one stitch, you’ll be able to learn a variety of others with ease. This article will show you some of the most beautiful beginner crochet stitches.

Slip knot

A slip knot is required to begin each crochet item. Even though it isn’t technically a stitch, the slip knot is essential since it is the first step in the process. In a crochet craft, it’s the initial loop you make. There are several ways to make a slip knot in crochet, despite the fact that it is a relatively easy step.

More extensive photographs and my own method of producing a slip knot can be found in this post about how to make a slip knot and crochet chain.

The chain comes after you’ve learned how to tie a slip knot.

Chain (CH)

Chain (or CH) is the foundation for all other stitches. It might be as short as two or three loops or as lengthy as a hundred or more loops. If you’re crocheting a hat or a circular mat, you’ll probably need a handful of chains to get started, as most “crochet in the round” or “in circle” crafts do.

Making a chain is the best and most straightforward method to begin practicing basic crochet skills such as holding a hook, holding yarn, and maintaining a consistent tension throughout the process.

Slip Stitch (SL ST)

The slip stitch (or SL ST) is the shortest crochet stitch when it comes to stitching height. As a result, you’ll usually see it finish off objects and join portions of a crochet creation together. One may also use it to add aesthetic intricacy to a more oversized item, such as my Moonstone Beach Throw’s horizontal stripes. Know more on how to slip stitch.

The slip stitch is helpful because it contains many parts of other stitches, making it easier to learn them later.  You may construct the crochet object entirely using a slip stitch, but because this stitch is so short, it takes a long time to make it large.

Single Crochet (SC)

Single Crochet Stitch (or SC) is a simple crochet stitch that many crocheters remember fondly since it was the first stitch they learned and used to make their first product. Even though SC stitch is on the short side and takes a long time to complete a large item with it, it provides a genuine sense of accomplishment.

A single crochet stitch can be used alone or in combination with other stitches to make crochet fabric. It can be used alone in a row of single crochet or with other, higher stitches to create a wavy look. It’s a good starting point for more complicated stitches like the popcorn stitch.

Half Double Crochet (HDC)

One of the most popular stitches is the half-double crochet (or HDC) stitch. It’s more complicated than single crochet, maybe not as much as Double Crochet.

When learning to crochet, the HDC stitch is a logical step. It provides the crochet fabric with a unique character and a thrilling new stitch to master. It’s somewhat higher than an SC stitch but still produces a dense fabric, making it ideal for bags, pillows, and see-through clothes, as well as cowls, scarves, and blankets!

Double Crochet (DC)

The Double Crochet (or DC) stitch is so standard that it can be found anywhere. Let’s just say it’s one of the all-time greats. The DC stitch is a versatile stitch that you may use to make blankets, shawls, sweaters, hats, scarves, and cowls, to name a few examples.

Double Crochet stitches are a terrific go-to when you want to build an item that comes together quickly and looks excellent. Because it’s a tall stitch, it helps you speed up your work. Turn to DC stitch if you need a quick craft or present.

Half Double Crochet Back Loop Only (HDC BLO)

All of the stitches listed above are fundamental, classic stitches that any novice crocheter should know. So, how about we add a little whimsy, an additional stitch that will give texture and charm to your project?

HDC BLO is similar to HDC except that instead of hooking into both loops of the V at the top of the stitch, you hook into the back loop.

This stitch is incredibly adorable and adds a horizontal ridge to the crochet fabric or may make your crochet appear like knitting if you use it in every row!
